5 Games Kids Played Outdoors Before They Had iPads

The Best Outdoor Games

Before touchscreens became the center of every human being on the planet, kids used to run wild outside, enjoying the fresh air with friends and family. All of their free time was spent playing one of these nostalgic outdoor games we've listed below. Which of these classics was your favorite?

1) Tag

Requiring no equipment at all, tag was a straightforward game with one “it” player who tried to catch someone else. Once tagged, the new player became “it,” and the chase continued until everyone was tired out. It worked well in parks, schoolyards, and any place with enough room to run safely.

2) Hide-and-Seek

This beloved childhood game begins with one player counting while the others look for sneaky places to hide. After counting, the seeker then searches everywhere until everyone is found or returned to the starting point. It's all about quiet movement, quick decisions, and fair counting with hide-and-seek!

3) Hopscotch

To enjoy hopscotch, you'll need a small marker like a stone or coin, and numbered squares drawn on the ground. Players hopped through the course on one foot in certain squares while avoiding the marked space. It was easy to set up and was an entirely friendly game.

4) Kick the Can

Kick the Can combined chasing and hiding with a single object placed in an open area. One player guarded the can while others hid, and a successful kick could free players who were caught. You definitely needed an energetic group to enjoy this one, not to mention required attention to agreed-upon rules.

5) Red Light, Green Light

Another game that required no equipment, in Red Light, Green Light, one player faced away from the group and called out commands. On “green light,” players moved forward, and on “red light,” they had to stop immediately. Make sure you don't get caught moving or you might just be "it" next round!
