5 Ugly Home Designs From The ‘60s and ‘70s

Make It Stop

We can’t really blame homeowners of the past. We know that shag carpets and wood panels were all the rage, and just about every home reflected it. We can, however, poke fun at some of the wildest decor choices we’re glad hit the bricks.

1. Plastic on the Furniture

Every grandparent is guilty of this one! They said those awful plastic coverings protected the upholstery, but they also made everyone very uncomfortable. They were sticky, unsightly, and made for some pretty embarrassing noises, too.

2. Wood Paneling

Wood paneling can look kind of nice when done correctly. However, every house covered its walls with it back in the day, which made it far less attractive. When you walk into the bathroom and see wood panel walls, you know you’re in trouble.

3. Shag Carpets

We’re not sure why shag carpets were ever a thing. We guess you could say that they were sort of fluffy, but that hardly justifies their appearance or just how difficult they are to clean. Not to mention, ‘70s bungalows have massive living rooms covered in the stuff.

4. Water Bed

Hop on, kids! It’s time for the most uncomfortable sleep of your life. Of course, if you wanted to make yourself sea sick in bed, this was the place to do it. Otherwise, this nonsensical piece of furniture gave us bad dreams every time.

5. Lava Lamps

It’s hard to believe lava lamps were ever cool. They might have a sort of nostalgic charm for some people, but for the rest of us, we see it for the gimmicky accessory it is. Don’t call yourself a lamp either—it’s still way too dark in here!
