5 Books We'd Recommend To Beginner Literature Readers

Looking to Break Into the World of Books?

In the world of phones and constant dopamine rushes, books don’t seem all that great. It’s impossible for us to cover the endless wonder that awaits in your local library, but we can suggest a few incredible stories that cover a wide range of genres, each one offering its own gift to any reader.

1. To Kill a Mockingbird

It’s not an easy read, but it’s a necessary one that kids everywhere discuss in school. It’s a brutal exploration of class in the American South, focusing on racial injustice and glaring inequality through the eyes of a small child. Though it was written in the ‘60s, you don’t have to worry about old English or confusing phrases.

2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Any fantasy nerds out there? We won’t judge you if you watched the movies first, but the books brought those epic stories to life—they deserve a read. You still have all your favorite characters and incredible journeys, but with way more packed between the covers.

3. And Then There Were None

There’s nothing wrong with diving into a little mystery now and then. Agatha Christie is one of the top whodunnit voices, and her stories are a great way to break into accessible fiction. Though you might figure out the mystery before it’s done, you’ll still be on the edge of your seat.

4. The Little Prince

Who said you couldn’t read children’s books? People don’t give enough credit to picture books, discrediting them as far too easy. However, those very stories inspire countless others, and they’re packed with all the same wisdom and beauty that other novels are. You’ll learn about love, responsibility, and life’s vast profundity.

5. Animal Farm

We won’t lie: this one isn’t an easy read either. While it’s not as violent as some other recommendations, it’s still a tough exploration of power and corruption—but, you know, with pigs. It’s a quick read that somehow crams an entire allegory for the Soviet Union into about 100 pages.
